Recent offshore deep sea gas findings in Israel, have prompted unprecedented development and world-renowned scientific and environmental challenges. These have paved the way for our unique international program which offers students the opportunity to foster a career in Marine Geosciences. Leveraging the Mediterranean Sea as a natural marine laboratory, the international MSc program for Marine Geosciences offers a once in a lifetime opportunity to obtain theoretical knowledge together with hands-on experience at sea.

This international Master’s program is part of the University of Haifa’s Leon H. Charney School of Marine Sciences. Globally renowned for its high professional standards,  the Leon Charney School of Marine Sciences is the largest academic center of marine sciences in Israel, and the only one to be included in the prestigious 2023 Shanghai Academic Ranking. It ranks among the top 200 globally in Oceanography, and in the top 30 for Sustainable Development goal 14 “Life below the water”, in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2022. Our world class researchers provide students with the necessary knowledge, tools, skills, and experiential learning to become groundbreaking marine scientists.

The State of Israel has chosen the school to lead MERCI -the Mediterranean Sea Research Center of Israel, consisting of seven universities, two colleges, and two government research institutes. With research labs and teaching facilities on our Mount Carmel campus, the Mediterranean as our research lab, and 3 coastal research centers, the school is constantly conducting groundbreaking research on the Mediterranean on scientific, tech and environmental levels.

English taught thesis track:

This international thesis-track program is taught in English over two academic years beginning in October, awarding a Master of Science (MSc) in Marine Geosciences from the University of Haifa.

Admissions Requirements

  • BSc degree in in Geology, Geophysics, Marine Science, Engineering, or other related sciences with a minimum of 3.0 GPA, 80% (B) (Israeli system), or equivalent in all undergraduate courses.
  • Department pre-requisites are a basic knowledge of science in the following areas: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Geology, Atmosphere, English, and Computers.
  • Good command of the English language.
